Historical Fiction Review

Forsaken Dreams by MaryLu Tyndall is the first book in the "Escape to Paradise" series. Also, it's the first book I've read by this author. And honestly, I didn't like it. Her idea was good, but she put some really weird things in it that was just unnecessary or really creepy. I couldn't enjoy the story because I kept thinking really?! Are you serious?!

The Civil War had ended a year ago, and Eliza Crawford decided to journey to Brazil with other Southerners wanting to leave the South. It just wasn't the same with the Northerners taking over. Plus, everyone shunned her because she married a Northern General before the war started. The marriage was a big mistake, and Eliza just wants to start over in a new land where nobody knows who she is and what she did. The new colony would need her skills as a nurse.

Colonel Blake Wallace started the expedition to Brazil. He was being hunted as a war criminal and needed to leave his beloved South especially since the Northerners killed his whole family. Once they began sailing to Brazil, he started to fall in love with Eliza.

Eliza was dismayed to see one person on board ship who knew her seven years ago. Magnolia Scott had introduced Eliza to her late husband, but she didn't seem to remember her. Yet. As she nervously waits for the other shoe to fall, Eliza falls in love with Blake. But could he ever love a "traitor"?

A lot of misfortunes happen along the way, and the author insinuates it's because of one man. One of the problems was called  a demonic sickness so she's going with that causing everything wrong.  Delving into dark stuff is not want I want to read about or be exposed to. Made me so annoyed. She could have easily put in plenty of natural things that go wrong on a sea voyage! So I wouldn't recommend this book. The story was just so irritating. And boring. Too many things going on.

I was given this book free as long as I review it.
