Another Thought

I disagree with a lot of modern ideas. I disagree with the music of today, the art of today, and the psychologists. Did you know that psychology and modern art started around the same time? They both teach the same thing. Delve into your feelings. Do whatever your heart desires. As long as you are happy then everything is ok. Whatever looks good or sounds good to you is fine. It doesn’t matter what other people say or think. It just matters what you believe. And everybody’s belief is different so we all are believing in the right thing. (By the way, music wasn’t far behind her cousins.)
Most of you know my feelings about psychology. To me God is my one and only psychologist. Why would anyone want to trust a fallible human?! You see so many Christians today going into counseling or psychology. Why is that? Can’t the Bible show you what to do? And besides that God gave us parents and preachers that we can go to for any counsel we may need. But I’m getting off of my main topic - modern art.
It started in the 1880s as a revolt against the realists. The Impressionists painted blurry looking images which moved on to painting in shapes and cubes and then contorting everything we see today into something that only the artist can understand. (Or at least he says he does. I don’t believe they really know what they paint half the time.) They are trying to portray their "feelings" onto paper. They have to explain what they paint so people can understand what they are trying to portray. Shouldn’t you be able to look at a painting and understand it without an explanation? Shouldn’t what you paint resemble what you see instead of what you feel or imagine it to be? It just ends up looking confusing and meaningless to everybody else. "But God is not the author of confusion, but of peace..." I Corinthians 14:33a
I can paint a picture with meaning in a realistic style. I can put across a "feeling" but in a normal, real way. For example, I painted an Indian, and you can look at him and see the sadness I wanted to put across. I painted a ballerina dancing in a dream world and most people (mainly the women lol) got the meaning of her dropping her handkerchief for her prince to come. You can even put expression in animal’s faces, too without contorting the image into something you can’t even recognize. Something that just looks like a jumble of colors and shapes that makes you dizzy by just looking at it isn’t art.
The devil likes to use the arts to get people. And the scary part is that it is working. We can see why Contemporary Christian Music is wrong. It sounds like the world. Why can’t we see that modern art is wrong?! It’s just like music. Chaotic and loud! There really is no meaning to it no matter what they say. A portrayal of an object not in it’s real form is a mockery. God designed things a certain way for a reason. Even scientists will tell you that even though some things in the universe look chaotic or random, it really isn’t. It’s all perfectly planned by a perfect God.
"Let all things be done decently and in order." I Corinthians 14:40
"Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord." Ephesians 5:10

What is art?

art is painting something that you see. see as in see in reality. artists like to do things that are different and in different ways and that's ok as long as it is done realistically - that's the key. modern art is like taking a hymn and turning it into a rock song. art needs to represent who God is which means we need to represent it honestly to the public. what kind of testimony would i have if i painted distorted images and called it art. what kind of principles would i have. i have to make sure that i think of all this. the main thing to me is to have a testimony of who God is by my painting. representing nature or people or objects as they really are b/c God is the One who made everything. He designed the world so beautifully - why mess with His perfection? i've always wanted my painting's to be a testimony for others and this is the answer God has given me.

Isn't it possible that your definition of art is the same as the moder artists? They use art as a medium just like you do. You are using art to teach a perspective about God. They are using art to express the deeper philosophical issues of life. Some people appreciate its chaos because they see a picture of the world much deeper than others. How do you express the conflicts of the wisdom literature in the Hebrew Bible. Job's enigmas and Ecclesiastes' vanity are answered by an ideal. But only viewing the ideal doesn't mean the other perspective does not exist. I enjoy viewing that perspective and appreciate it for what it is. Avoiding it does not dismiss it as a reality in our world. Expressing it might bring us around to the Answer.

oops I deleted my first post. hey I don't speak French. ??? Back with more of the great art debate after these messages...I'm on the edge of my seat

the other perspective is the world's. why would we even want to portray the world??? we see enough of it as it is. it's like you are saying show people the wrong so they can get it right. well, that hasn't worked to well has it? it hasn't worked for anything. listen to bad music (from "Christians") so you can turn to God. watch bad movies (made by "Christians") so you can turn to God. speak filthiness so you can turn to God. paint the wrong view of life and you'll turn to Him??? i mean come on. you know as well as i do that that just doesn't work.
they use art to "express the deeper philosophical things of life". yes, i know they do all that, but does it make it right? as a Christian we should be portraying it in the right way by honoring God. these artists are so confused and disillusioned they delve into these mind games hoping to be shown the truth through themselves. through life. through anything BUT the ANSWER. i think we are the ones who confuse everything b/c we can't fathom how simple it all really is. for example, people have a hard time understanding how simple salvation is. that's even in II Cor. 11:3b.
i think they don't want to know the Right so they turn from God and turn to themselves and their feelings about the reality of the world and life in general. these artists make others feel all the hopelessness they feel. they don't make them want to learn more about God in any way, shape, or form. they don't give them any HOPE.
(i just read Ecclesiastes last week. love that book. you need to do a book on it for me.)

Sorry, been to busy to get on till now. I don't disagree with much of what you say but I think you're missing the point. Most evangelical Christians have an idea in their heads that they think God is. Sadly, their God is the product of rationalized ideals about goodness and love often taken from scripture. The problem is the human God we have in our heads. In other words, according to your philosophy you (nor most evangelical Christians) would never write a book like the Bible, and yet that is just what God did. Christians, simultaneously work overtime to rationalize why there are these anomalies in scripture that portray God as unjust or evil, causing wars and destruction, and so on. Why can't we let God be God and let us be human. Only by being human can we be what God wants us to be. It's time to stop being God. Modern art like so many things is touted as an intrinsically evil thing but it is what it is -- humans practicing a God-given though sin-tainted gift. Do we as Christians have to place that outside of the arena of human enjoyment as created beings? I think we try to be more god-like than God is. Why, because we rationalize a God that is humanly perfect -- but God is not human. Nyways, it's something to think about.

sorry it took me awhile to get back to you. i know you only have certain times you can get on. anyway, i agree with you up to a point. these artists are human and are using a sin-tainted gift. very true. but why do we have to fall prey to their philosophy of life when we know it is so wrong?disagreeing with a sinful philosophy is not being God. it's being a Christian human being - one who wants to do what God says. the thing is we have free will so we can choose either side. i would rather be on the side of caution instead of straggling the fence or going over it. (i really do believe it is wrong, though.) i'm too tired to say anything else. i'll just wait for your response. lol

You need to read Schaeffer's 'Art & The Bible'. (by the way, i came to my conclusions independent of Schaeffer's ideas, but i heartily agree) :)
