Review: The Storybook Knight

The Storybook Knight by Helen Docherty is a sweet little story about a knight who doesn't want to fight. He wants to read! So when his parents send him off to fight the dragon terrorizing the village, he reluctantly goes with his pack filled with books. He encounters some bad guys like a troll, and when he reads to them they calm down. The knight gives them the book and continues on his way until he gets to the dragon.

My son loved this book especially since he loves knights, dragons, and books. It was the perfect match. ;-) The illustrations were bright and fun, and my son was devouring every detail as I read. It was a fabulous find! Perfect for boys or girls. :-)

Review: Win or Lose

Win or Lose by Lysa Terkeurst is a really cute story about having a good attitude whether you win or lose. The illustrations are bright, cute, and filled with action. My son loved looking at the pictures and really enjoyed the story.

This story starts with two kids going to the forest to set up games for their forest friends to play. Whoever wins the most games will be crowned leader of the forest, but when the animals struggle to be nice they find out what really matters.

Kids will enjoy this story because they can relate to always wanting to win or getting upset about losing. I loved how well the author got the kids thinking and able to recognize who should be made the leader. I think this story is perfect for ages 4-7, and I hope your child loves it as much as mine did.

Review: Thankful

Thankful by Eileen Spinelli is a sweet, simple story with beautiful illustrations by Archie Preston. The pictures reminded me of comics in a way. They were fun to look at through the story because there was so much action with the characters.

The book wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I thought it would explain more what thankfulness really means. Instead it mentioned different occupations and what you can be thankful for each one. The cute part was all the pictures of the kids with their jobs. ;-) My son enjoyed it, but I wanted more depth. Plus, it says it's for ages 4-8, but it seems more geared to 2-4 year olds. There was only one sentence per page, but my son did like it so maybe it's want he needed. A simple rhyme saying what you can be thankful for. :-)

Review: Only God Can Make a Kitten

Only God Can Make a Kitten by Rhonda Gowler Green and illustrated by Laura J. Bryant is a sweet book explaining to little kids that God created all the wonders we see from little seeds to snow to you. My son loved it, and we read it twice. My son especially loved the kitten in the pictures. I loved how detailed and calm all the illustrations were.

Each page starts out with a little boy asking his mom where something came from, and the mom explaining that God made it. The illustrations match little kids personalities and make it endearing to kids and parents alike. I loved the repetition and rhyming throughout the book; it was very well done. Plus, everything about the story seemed gentle and peaceful making it the perfect bedtime story. The publisher recommends it for 4-8 year old kids, but I think it's better suited for ages 3-6. I could see 2 year olds enjoying this story, too since the rhymes on each page are short and to the point. I know my son would have been fine at that age because the illustrations are detailed and encompass the whole page. It would have helped him stay still. ;-)

I highly recommend this book. I'm always looking for books that reiterate Biblical truths in a fun, imaginative way, and I'm really pleased with our newest addition to our library.
